Firkin Crane

Watch performances of many dance styles, browse an exhibition on the history of Irish dance, and enjoy special screenings of a variety of dance-themed films. Join in and dance the night away or just observe this wonderful dance extravaganza!

CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory
Visit Blackrock Castle Observatory where an evening of wonderful entertainment is waiting. The award-winning Cosmos at the Castle exhibit will be open to the public from 6pm, while the Cork Astronomy Club will guide visitors in stargazing when darkness fall. Entertainment, delicious food, drinks and more will be provided in the Castle Café and courtyard.

Triskel Arts Centre
Open on culture night from 6pm to midnight, admission FREE! As well as the visual arts featured in the galleries, there are some special treats lined up for the night, which include:

Children’s workshop (6-8pm)
Let your child try their hand at making musical instruments and ‘play’ with live musicians.

Organ Music and Choral favourites (8.15-9.15pm)
Enjoy a musical interlude featuring Colin Nicholls playing the newly restored T.C. Lewis organ in Triskel Christchurch and some choral favourites from the East Cork Choral Society.

Norwegian Wood (9.30pm, 133 mins)
Literature and cinema come together in this highly acclaimed Japanese drama film directed by Tran Anh Hung, based on Haruki Murakami’s novel of the same name. Screening courtesy of Soda Pictures.

Port of Cork
The Port of Cork have teamed up with Atlantic Sea Kayaking this year to host a musical evening, that begins in the boardroom and is followed by a night kayak up the river for a 20 lucky people in four groups of five.

LINC
Cork is home to a vibrant lesbian and bisexual community. Cork Culture Night celebrates this by showcasing LB culture Cork-style! There will be two film screenings on the night: Outside I’m Singing, directed by Lisa Fingleton, musical director, Evelyn Quinlan, and the short documentary, Rebels with a Cause, directed by Rena Blake and produced by Lisa Fingleton.

‘Outside I’m Singing’ follows the experiences of the Mna Mna choir as they produce their first musical ‘The Farmers Daughter’, while ‘Rebels with a Cause’ follows the fortunes of Team Cork, the largest team from Ireland to attend the gay Games in Cologne in 2010. From cheering on the sidelines to crossing the finish line, the story follows them from training to participating alongside 10,000 other athletes in this life-changing event.

Cork Arts Theatre
The Cork Arts Theatre is hosting two great events. The first is an introduction to Short Film Writing, taking place from 3.30 – 4.30pm. There will also be a short play performance at 6.30pm, which will be chosen from the 10×10 minute plays that are being performed that week at 8pm.

In Hubert Bookbindery, visitors can watch a demonstration of binding a small multi-section notebook (booking necessary) and take a guided tour through the workshop where they meet the makers and have a Q+A session.

Ó Bhéal
Enjoy a delightful evening of poetry with guest poet John Carmody. The evening ends with an open-mic, which is dedicated to Cork poems or poems by Cork Poets. Bring along your favourite Cork poem, or just come and enjoy!

Alliance Francaise
Jeremie Legrand presents a diverse programme on the latest violin he has made taking influence from romantic French opera pieces, to Irish airs and reels and jigs, with accompaniment by traditional instrumentalists. A feast of resonances in between colours and culture. Performances at 8pm and 9pm.

‘Layers’ – an exhibition of paintings by American artist Diane Peters. “Everyday rhythms of life and its foundations are full of chaos and disorder that lies beneath the smooth, calm surfaces – one cannot exist without the other, or indeed, be appreciated without the other. Each painting doesn’t simply exist, they, in a sense, have a life of their own, a life that is born out of layers of experience, emotion and reaction to life around them.”

In this colourful ambience, take time to learn French through plastic art with Alliance tutor, Aude. Learn French, have fun, discover modern French art, where each art-theme has a linguistic objective. Places limited. 10 students max. Booking necessary. 5-6pm children’s class, 6-7.30pm adult class.

Trinity Presbyterian
Celebrate the 150th anniversary of Trinity Presbyterian in a light-hearted pageant performed by church members featuring the crooked steeple, the connection with Cash’s Stores, our interaction with other countries and much, much more. All welcome and admission free! Performances (30mins) will take place at 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

The English Market
The Market opens late from 6-9pm with music and entertainment during the evening. Stall crawl through the Market and feel the magical atmosphere of this special venue ‘after dark’. Traders will also be providing a variety of very reasonably priced tasting plates throughout the night.

County Hall
Come and enjoy musical entertainment in the foyer of County Hall. Experience panoramic views of the city from the 17th floor. Listen to a talk on 18th century Blarney Court of Poetry given by John Mulcahy and visit an exhibition of items from the Cork Collection and Special Collections of the Cork County Library.
Military Museum, Collins Barracks
Come visit the only military museum in Cork. Not only is it the story of bricks and mortar, it tells the tale of the personnel who served in the barracks for over 200 years. Journey back in time through Ireland’s military past, from the British years and War of Independence to the Emergency and the Irish Defence Forces in the United Nations Peacekeeping Service.

UCC Visitors Centre
Evening tour of UCC – A free one-hour walking tour of UCC visiting the grounds, main quadrangle, Aula Maxima, Ogham Stone Corridor and the Crawford Observatory.

CIT James Barry Exhibition Centre
Come and see an exciting exhibition of a collaborative European project that involves 6 different colleges. This exhibition, which focuses on the notion of memento, showcases a selection of work from each college, including CIT.

Graffiti Theatre Company
Children aged 3-8 and their parents are invited to family story-making workshops in the Graffiti studio. Create original stories and join in the fun from 4pm – 6.30pm making your own “happy ever after!”

Cork Printmakers
Take a guided tour with an artist member, create a dry point in the ‘Make a Print’ workshop, learn how to identify a print in our short seminar or attend the screen-printing demonstration and special exhibition of members’ work. All events are free.

Munster Literature Centre
The Munster Literature Centre will be screening a selection of videos about Irish authors. Coffee, tea and books by local authors will be available for purchase.

Gurranabraher & Churchfield Youth and Community Resource Centre
Céilí Night with Terry McCarthy and Donal Ring Junior with free set dancing lessons before and during the Céilí Performance from the youth group and local primary schools beginning in the afternoon and carrying on into the evening. Visitors can also enjoy a guided tour of the building, history display on the community of Gurranabraher, plus a display of knitwear and crochet work from the community association. Free tea/coffee and light refreshments.

Unitarian
Jim Corrigall is a Unitarian ministry student at Harris Manchester College in Oxford, and a member of the T.S. Eliot Society in the UK. Before studying for the ministry, Jim worked as a journalist in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Britain, including 17 years with BBC World Service in London. At the BBC, he made programmes on the arts as well as political documentaries, including on the Irish peace process. An active trade unionist, Jim also travelled to Northern Ireland and the Republic in his capacity as President of the National Union of Journalists in 2004/5. Jim is a literature graduate of the University of Natal, and he has in recent years made a special study of poetry and spirituality in the work of John Donne, Gerard Manley Hopkins and T.S. Eliot. He is the Editor of the Unitarian Christian Herald.
