Revelry at Rockingham: The Social Lives of Irish Landlords 1800-1914- King House, Boyle
Dr Karol Mullaney-Dignam, IRCHSS Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, Co. Kildare
This illustrated lecture looks at the social life of the landed elite in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Ireland, with a particular focus on the King family at Rockingham, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Much of the social activity in which landlords engaged with their families, friends and tenants was based on dining and dancing and the Kings were no exception. This lecture will give examples of social events, associated with the family, which occurred on the Rockingham demesne and in the town of Boyle between 1800 and 1914. It will shed light on social interactions between landowners and tenants, relationships between landed families in North Roscommon and the wider social significance of Rockingham House in the early twentieth century. Music and dancing typical of the era will also be discussed.
