Letterkenny Culture Night 2009

HIGHLIGHTS

 

In common with other participating towns and cities across the country, the Culture Night programme in Letterkenny will concentrate on highly accessible, family friendly events.  The programme will centre around Donegal County Museum, the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny Town Council, Donegal County Council’s Heritage and Archives Services, An Grianán Theatre, the Create-a-link Artists Studios and ArtCo Gallery and the County Library Service. Culture Night in Letterkenny will also mark the culmination of Donegal County Council’s programme of Social Inclusion Week activities which will run from September 21st to 25th.

 

An Cosán Glas at Letterkenny Town Park

6pm – 10pm
 
A recreation of the hugely successful Cosán Glas  ( ‘Green Path’ ) trail of temporary sculptural works relocated, for one night only, from their customary environment of the sand dunes at  Machaire Rabhartaigh shore, to Letterkenny Town Park.  The project has been happening in various locations throughout North and West Donegal since 1995 and features works by leading Donegal Gaeltacht artists Deirdre Ní Bhraonáin, Christy Keeney, Ewan Berry, Seamus ó Cinnéide, Annjo Nic Ghiolla Cheara, Mícheál Mac Pháidín, Sarah Lewtas, Billy Wynter (Cornwall) and Cathal Mac Fhionnghaile, winner of this year’s John O’Leary Fine Art Graduate Award ( Sligo County Council / Sligo IT ).

‘Modernism, Activism, Bauhaus.’
Constructive Tendencies in Hungary 1910-1930   An exhibition of works, never shown before in Ireland,  by a seminal group of Hungarian avant-garde artists, including Robert Berény, Lajos Kassák, Sándor Bortnyik, István Dési Huber, Jenó Gábor and Béla Uitz, with pioneering moving image artist, Lázló Moholy-Nagy. Presented in association with the Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs and the Institut Hongrois, Paris.

My Wains Could Do That !  Make Your Own Modernist Art 6.00pm –10.00pm
Running alongside the Hungarian avant-garde show, will be the Hands-On Room where visitors to the exhibition will be provided with the materials and easy-to-follow instruction as to how to make their own artworks the style of the Hungarian avant garde of the 1920s and 30s.   Open to children and adults alike.

The Best of An Grianán
In keeping with its own strongly held commitment to being ‘ a centre of artistic excellence at the heart of the community ’, An Grianán Theatre’s special Culture Night programme will offer all-areas access to the best of local Donegal talent, with a special emphasis on the presentation of original work. All parts of the building will buzz with music, theatre and visual performances which will entertain and stimulate children, teens and adults alike.

Inishowen Carnival Group & Create a Link Artists.
Create-a-Link Artists Studio artists will collaborate with batik artist Joanne McGlynn and the Inishowen Carnival Group to animate the Create A Link Courtyard with a myriad of carnivalesque flags and banners.
 
Both sculptor Redmond Herrity’s and the Create A Link  artists’ studios will be Open to The Public and an Exhibition of New Work by Create A Link Artists and Friends will open at The Art Co Gallery from 7.00pm
 
Inishowen Gospel Choir
‘Shackles off my Feet so I can Dance…! ‘    9.00pm
 
The hottest Gospel Choir in the land – fresh from recent festival appearances at Glastonbury, and a sold-out show with Moya Brennan, Liam ó Maonlaoí and Natty Wailer at the Earagail Arts Festival,  the 30 member choir make a very welcome return to Letterkenny for a special Culture Night concert at the Create A Link Courtyard.

‘All Change!’  Railway Exhibition   6.00pm –10.00pm
The Story of the Railways in Donegal and Northern Ireland. Culture Night at the ‘All-Change’ exhibition will feature a live music and song presentation –
‘Music to Watch Trains By ‘ with the fabulous Stubble Brothers bluegrass and country band   7.30pm
