Temple Bar Cultural Trust Announce Programme For Largest Ever Culture Night

20 Irish Cities, Towns, Counties & Islands to get Cultural on September 24th

Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and Irish cultural legend Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh today (Wednesday 16th August), at Dublin Castle, unveiled the incredible programme for Culture Night 2010. On the 24th September 20 cities, towns , counties and islands across our island will offer access to an amazing array of free late night culture and people can now see the full programme at www.culturenight.ie. This is the biggest Culture Night to date and it is expected that over half a million people nationwide will explore and engage with culture on September 24th.

The theme of this year’s Culture Night is ‘What Will You See?’ and there is plenty to choose from! The participating regions, Dublin, Galway City, Galway County - Oughterard, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Wexford, Sligo, Mayo, Wicklow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Westmeath, Letterkenny, Kerry, Carlow, Leitrim, Roscommon, and The Gaeltacht regions, will be transformed into cultural playgrounds with culture in all its forms including painting, poetry, dance, opera, traditional music, architecture, history, theatre and more, accessible to people of all ages.

For the first time, the Gaeltacht regions will also host their own Culture Night, marking a great step in bringing culture closer to people and moving towards Temple Bar Cultural Trusts vision of an all-Ireland Culture Night. Grandparents, grandchildren, families and people of all backgrounds will experience Culture Night –bringing together a very unique and diverse audience who all share a desireto explore the wealth of culture on their doorsteps..

Dermot McLaughlin, CEO of Temple Bar Cultural Trust, Organizers of Culture Night, said, “Everyone working in culture and the arts in Ireland has faced huge economic and other challenges in the last year.  Yet despite these difficulties Culture Night has expanded from 11 regions last year to 20 in 2010 and many new venues have been added to existing regions which is a testament to the resilience of Irish culture, creativity and the arts. We all recognise the value that Culture Night brings to communities and neighbourhoods all over Ireland, and the benefit it also brings to the cultural venues that take part in Culture Night

“We are pleased to see that the importance of cultural venues to our society is increasingly recognised by Government, the local authorities and the public and private sectors. This is evident in Culture Night’s expansion to 20 regions this year, including the entire Gaeltacht region as well as Belfast and Derry hosting their own Culture Nights. We expect approximately half a million people to be engaged with Culture Night this year and there's plenty of room for everyone! So save the date, the 24th September 2010 will be a night of cultural exploration and fun!” Dermot added.

There is definitely plenty to see on Culture Night, why not….
