Join us in Smithfield Square Playground on Culture Night for a plethora of interactive drop-in activities including drumming, capoeira, salsa and hip-hop dancing, Makeshop Doodlebot workshops for youngsters, Tetrahedron structure build along with a 3D map of Dublin, fencing, an art zone and a whole area dedicated to mouth-watering international and domestic gourmet food.

If you have every fancied yourself as a pirate of the Caribbean or a Jedi Knight or outwitting an opponent on the piste, why not give fencing a try?! Join Fence Fit & friends this Culture Night and learn the basics of fencing. Fence Fit will be hosting a 3 hours fencing zone for all abilities and ages to join in. This workshop is suitable for children and is wheelchair friendly.

[No booking required, drop-in only, please note that only those wearing suitable attire will be able to join in.]

KIDS ZONE [5pm - 8pm]

The children's playground on Smithfield Square will come alive with various animators & face painters. Make sure to experience The Chime Cave which will be situated in this this zone. A circular space with different types of recycled metal chimes. An interactive communal sound installation for everyone to come and make music with together. All ages welcome to play with the chimes and frame in whatever style you feel like, sticks provided.


Fuinneamh, a 14ft diameter Community Drum returns this Culture Night. Join in and create some rhythm - suitable for all ages and no drumming experience needed. Hand built from 90% repurposed materials from all over Ireland by Dublin artist Bounce.


The artzone will all about felt making as Niki Collier invites you to take part in two workshops with a twist.

Watch and learn how to make hats out of felt and make sure to get your photo taken with a hat on.

My Egg. Do Not Sit!
Everyone is invited to make a egg out of felt in red and covered with extra colours to re-create the spunge like membrane of human egg. Have you ever wondered why we all know how a sperm looks but less of us know how an egg looks? Do you not think that this is a sign of male and female voice presence in our contemporary narrative? One is heard more than other?


MAKESHOP Doodlebot Workshop (Ages 5+) 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, 8pm

The Doodlebot workshop is a perfect introduction to the world of robotics for makers of all ages. Using a cup, motor, batteries and some markers, you build your very own doodling robot.

Booking required, limited capacity of 15 per workshop.

Tetrahedon Build (All Ages)

A build that will be on going throughout the night. Participants will add small sections of straw and string to a tetrahedron structure that will grow in size as the night goes on. LEDs will also be added so the structure will light up as it gets dark.

Build a Map of Dublin (All Ages)

A build that will be ongoing throughout the night. Using an array of materials and tools, participants will each add a small piece to a 3D map of Dublin laid out on the floor.

DANCE ZONE [5pm - 8pm]

Get moving and take part in free Salsa or Hip-Hop taster classes. These classes will run every 30min. No booking required, please note only those with suitable attire will be able to take part.

CIRCUS ZONE [5pm - 9pm]

Circus Skills Workshop [5pm - 7.30pm]

Join members of the Dublin Circus Project for a fun introduction to circus skills including juggling balls, plate spinning, balancing feathers, spinning poi and diabolo.

Firefly Performance [8.15pm - 9pm]

The Culture Night Smithfield Playground will close with a fire spectacle by the Dublin Circus Project entitled Firefly a 30 minute choreographed fire spectacle featuring 5 performers, Fire hoop, Fire Fans, Fire Staff, Fire Poi, Fire Skipping and more. Inspired by tribal themes, rock music and culture this is an expression of raw female power and love of freedom and fire!
